Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) is een tovenaarsmeester in het hedendaagse Manhattan die probeert zijn stad te beschermen tegen zijn aartsvijand, Maxim Horvath. Balthazar kan dit echter niet alleen, daarom benadert hij de jonge Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel). Dave is een doorsnee jongen maar heeft een verborgen potentieel om een tovenaar te kunnen worden. Balthazar neemt de jongen onder zijn hoede en geeft zijn onzekere leerling een stoomcursus magie. Het vergt het uiterste van Dave zijn moed om Balthazars training te overleven, de stad te redden en het meisje van zijn dromen voor zich te winnen.
