'Ik ben geen calypso-zangeres geworden, ik ben in calypso geboren', zegt Calypso Rose. Op vijftienjarige leeftijd stond ze al op het podium op haar thuiseiland Trinidad in het Caribisch gebied. Maar het zou een zware strijd voor haar zijn om voor zichzelf op te komen in de door mannen gedomineerde wereld. Zo ontwikkelde ze zich tot een strijdlustige vrouwenrechten activiste. De film is een intiem portret van de ‘Queen of Calypso’ waaruit blijkt dat haar muziek vormend is voor ‘Afro-Caribbean Soul’, dat ook thuis is in hiphop en reggae. De documentaire vertelt met veel opzwepende muziek het levensverhaal van de krachtige zangeres en leidt tevens naar haar familiewortels in Afrika.
